About this book
The Sanskrit drama treats its subject through origin, development, theory and practice, the scope announced on the title page. The discussion of dramatic origins presents Professor Konow's view that ritual dramas were borrowed from popular mime, whose chief elements were dance, song and music. The argument rejects Professor Konow's suggested origin of drama because evidence for secular pantomime preceding religious pantomime is lacking, including evidence for that sequence in India.
The account identifies songs and ceremonial dances among the elements entering into drama. The treatment of love describes Mādhava seeking to ease his sorrows by making a picture of his beloved from memory.
