About this book
A History of Sanskrit Literature by Arthur Anthony Macdonell begins with an introductory chapter on the discovery of Sanskrit literature in the latter part of the eighteenth century. It notes earlier contacts: the Greeks after Alexander's invasion, the Arabs in the Middle Ages, European missionaries from the sixteenth century, and Abraham Roger's Dutch translation of the Sanskrit poet Bhartṛihari in 1651.
The text divides the ancient Indian language into two main divisions, Vedic and Sanskrit, and compares their difference to that between Homeric and classical Greek. It describes Vedic as the language of India's sacred literature, handed down among priestly singers. One passage describes a work whose last part, Alāta-çānti, or 'Extinction of the firebrand', uses a glowing stick waved about to explain how plurality and genesis seem to exist in the world.
