About this book
Janet crosses Carterhaugh by moonlight despite her father's warning, then meets a small elfin knight beside a rose-tree. Mary Macgregor retells old English and Scots ballads as stories for children, bringing their fairy encounters into prose. The opening tale follows Tamlane, carried away to Fairyland as a boy, and Janet, who refuses to accept that the enchanted plain is forbidden to her.
The contents name seven stories, including Hynde Horn, Lizzie Lindsay and Thomas the Rhymer. In Thomas's tale, the Queen of Elfland takes him beneath the Eildon hills and warns him against speaking in her country. Three roads, each with a different destination, give the adventure a moral dimension. Castles, moonlit moors and conversations with fairy rulers give younger readers a way into these older tales, presenting ballad figures through connected narrative scenes.
