About this book

A moonlit gathering of fairies opens Louisa May Alcott's Flower Fables, as the queen asks her companions to share stories and lessons from their day. Flowers, insects and woodland creatures fill these children's tales, where tiny homes and meals give the natural world a fairy scale. In the opening story, Violet volunteers to visit the Frost-King with a wreath of flowers, hoping that patient kindness can reach his cold heart.

Published in 1854, the collection brings together fairy stories and verse about generosity, care and learning to repair harm. The middle excerpt follows Thistledown as he works with Earth Spirits, tending roots and gathering water to earn a gift for Lily-Bell. His effort gives the moral lessons a practical form: affection means work as well as good intentions. Readers who enjoy flower imagery and stories with clear lessons will find both in these small enchanted worlds.
