About this book
Augusta Foote Arnold wrote The Sea-beach at Ebb-tide, a guide to the study of the seaweeds and the lower animal life found between tide-marks, with more than 600 illustrations. The preface says the volume is designed to be an aid to the amateur collector and student of the organisms, both animal and vegetable, which are found upon North American beaches. The preface adds that many invertebrates and some of the more notable varieties of seaweeds are described.
Instructions for mounted specimens say to cover a blotter with them, spread a piece of cotton cloth over them, place another blotter on top, and label each specimen with the name and the date and place of collection. The text says that the Crustacea derive their name from the nature of their crust or covering, which is earthy and brittle, not stony, like the shells of mollusks. The text names the lobster and crab as perhaps the most comprehensive examples, as well as the largest in size, of the class.
