About this book
Sponges and insects receive serious attention alongside birds and mammals in Ernest Ingersoll's survey of animal life. The preface explains why smaller organisms matter to the food supply of other creatures and to an understanding of animal development. Published in 1922, the illustrated volume begins with theories about life's origins, cells and the chemistry of living matter. Its contents organize the animal world through successive groups, moving from sea life and shell builders to fishes, reptiles and mammals.
The account of crocodilians brings this broad arrangement down to particular features. Ingersoll discusses the placement of eyes and nostrils, the construction of nests, eggs and the habitats of alligators. He links bodily structure with the demands of life in water and compares members of the group across different regions. Readers interested in the history of biology can examine how classification, anatomy and evolutionary ideas were explained to a general audience at the time.
