About this book
The title page gives the subtitle Its Stirring Story of Adventure, Peril, and Heroism. A coloured frontispiece shows British crosses and medals, among them a medal of Elizabeth for the defeat of the Armada in 1588 and the Victoria Cross. One passage describes Sir John Jervis on the Victory off Cape St. Vincent as reports come in about the Spanish fleet under Cordova: eighteen sail of the line, then twenty, then twenty-seven, with his flag-captain Halliwell answering him.
Another passage describes a trade jargon that draws on English and French, the French coming from French Canadian voyageurs, in which an Englishman is a King-George-man and an American a Boston-man, and which daughters of Hudson's Bay Company employees at Victoria rattle off like a mother tongue. One account tells of two men who stopped on an island for eight weeks, living on shell-fish.
