About this book
Champions of the Fleet presents tales of the navy’s fighting days, with a subtitle naming captains, men-of-war, and days that helped to make the empire. The harbour description includes boats carrying water-casks and pursers’ stores, ships’ launches and wherries, and lighters carrying cables, anchors, spars, and sailcloth.
Prisoners of war taken at sea travel under armed marine guards towards confinement in Porchester Castle, where two thousand compatriots are already held. A few favoured prisoners may obtain exchange by cartel, but the greater number must endure captivity until the war ends. The account describes Queen Elizabeth instantly calling the forces of England to arms.
