About this book

The Seiners, by James B. Connolly, carries the line It was the finest kind of excitement, our running to harbor. The chapter list includes, among others, The New Vessel of Withrow's, A Little Jog Along the Docks, Minnie Arkell and Little Johnnie Duncan Stands Examination. Gear is got out of the lofts, and everywhere topmasts are sent up, sails dragged out, stays swayed taut and halyards and sheets rove. The seine-boats are thirty-six or thirty-eight feet long, with green or blue bottoms to just above the waterline.

Clancy, standing aft, remarks that the seine-boat in tow is quite a drag for a vessel that's racing, and the skipper answers that they won't cast it off unless they have to. The shifting of a few barrels of salt is said to make a surprising difference in the trim of a vessel. Miss Luce is described as never having had a drink of wine before.
