About this book
Poor Man's Rock is listed among the novels by Bertrand W. Sinclair, alongside North of Fifty-Three, Big Timber and Burned Bridges. The contents list includes, among others, a prologue called Long, Long Ago and chapters called The House in Cradle Bay, Sea Boots and Salmon and Peril of the Sea. A man in a rowboat sees a high-bowed, shining mahogany cruiser, seventy feet or more over all, round the point and head into the bay. A short, stout man addresses the rower with the words "Take a couple of us ashore, will you?"
The text likens MacRae and Betty Gower to flint and steel, which could not come together without striking sparks. Gower says his life has been a failure, too, and that when Donald MacRae and he clashed, he prevailed and got what he wanted, but "it was only a shadow."
