About this book

After a winter of solitary mining, Vic Gregg finds that the return of spring makes his narrow working life harder to bear. He has taken on demanding assessment work to earn money for marriage to Betty Neal, but the long isolation leaves him restless. Max Brand places this Western novel among mountain cabins, mineral claims and the wide Asper Valley, giving the landscape a strong presence in Gregg's thoughts.

When Mrs. Sommers describes a visitor seeking members of a posse, Gregg recognizes Dan Barry and feels compelled to warn the men. Betty urges him to stay, while his sense of obligation pulls him towards danger. The tension comes from competing loyalties as much as the possibility of a fight.
