About this book
Broadway rehearsals are under way in the heat of late August when two actresses meet for lunch. Kitty Legaye has a successful career built partly on her youthful appearance; Sybil Merivale has been seeking work for months and is preparing to approach a manager. Their conversation brings the theater's practical pressures into view, from expensive clothes and uncertain employment to the effort of keeping a public image intact.
The story later follows Jim Barrison as he questions Kitty about the death of Mr. Mortimer, whom she had expected to marry. A theater alley, a waiting taxi and a brilliant scarlet evening coat become details worth examining. Barrison's discomfort at distressing Kitty gives the inquiry a personal edge. This detective novel combines the bustle of New York's theatrical world with the slower work of checking recollections, noticing objects and deciding what a witness can reliably tell.
