About this book

London fog turns the streets outside Covent Garden into a confusion of lamps, carriages and unseen voices. Waiting in her cab after the opera, Kitty Killigrew overhears two men discussing a lost wager and an agreement lasting six months. Her wealthy American father hopes she will marry a title, while Kitty admires the affection between a married couple she knows. Harold MacGrath sets this mystery novel among people whose polished manners leave room for curiosity and uncertainty.

Later, Thomas works on a romance manuscript in the Killigrew household. Kitty offers to read it and mentions editors who might help him, bringing their conversation onto more personal ground. His concern about suitable theater clothes and his astonishment at American office buildings add humor to the differences in money and custom. Readers can follow the intrigue while enjoying the exchanges about reading, ambition and social expectations.
