About this book
Lincoln Steffens says in his introduction that this is not a book but a collection of articles, still journalism in their new dress. After the introduction the contents list seven pieces: Tweed Days in St. Louis, The Shame of Minneapolis, The Shamelessness of St. Louis, Pittsburg: A City Ashamed, Philadelphia: Corrupt and Contented, Chicago: Half Free and Fighting On, and New York: Good Government to the Test.
In the introduction Steffens writes that when he set out to describe corrupt systems he meant to show how the people were deceived, but the first study, of St. Louis, showed that the corruption was financial, commercial and social as well as political. He names Claude H. Wetmore as the man with whom he compiled that first article. The title page is dated 1904.
