About this book

Beaumont was one of the sharpest short-story writers of mid-century American genre fiction, and this collection shows why. Moving between science fiction, horror, and quiet dread, the stories test the seam between dream and waking, sanity and delusion, the ordinary and the monstrous. Many first appeared in the pulp and digest magazines of the 1950s, the same period that produced his celebrated scripts for The Twilight Zone. His style is clean and unsettling, building menace through small wrong details rather than shock. Cut short by illness before he turned forty, Beaumont left a body of short work that has outlasted most of its era.
