About this book
Elegy is by Charles Beaumont, and its blurb calls it "an impossible situation: an asteroid in space where no asteroid should have been, with a city that could only have existed back on Earth!" Captain Webber hears that Mr. Friden says he sees a city, and asks "You realize, of course, that that is impossible?"
Captain Webber puts his eye to a circular glass and says, "That is a city, or else we've all gone crazy." Captain Webber says, "I suppose you knew that we were lost," and that they "ran almost entirely out of fuel several months ago". Mr. Greypoole, who nods his head slowly, answers the captain's question "just who do you think we are?" with "I'd thought you to be the men from the Glades of course." The captain says, "We're from the planet Earth," and that they escaped in a rocket and started off for Mars. Mr. Greypoole says, "I see, of course, why the communications system doesn't work, why my calendar is out of commission."
