Tanizaki Jun'ichiro (1886-1965) was one of modern Japan's foremost novelists, celebrated for fiction that probes desire, obsession, and the clash between Western influence and Japanese tradition. His major works include Naomi, Some Prefer Nettles, and the family epic The Makioka Sisters.
