About this book
The Silver Box is a comedy in three acts by John Galsworthy, printed among the first series of his plays. The list of persons names John Barthwick, a wealthy Liberal, with his wife, their son Jack, their solicitor Roper and their charwoman Mrs. Jones, and also a landlady, a detective and a police magistrate.
The stage directions have Jones drink whisky, take a cigarette from the silver box and, with cunning glee, pocket the box and a purse. Snow, a detective, draws a woman toward the door, and Jones cries out that she is his wife and a respectable woman and that he took the thing himself. In a police court exchange, Jack says he does not remember anything of the sort, and Jones says he has never been had up in a police court before.
