About this book
The Singing Leaves is by Josephine Preston Peabody, and its title page calls it A BOOK OF SONGS AND SPELLS. A note thanks the editors of Harper’s Monthly, Scribner’s Magazine, and other periodicals for permission to reprint many of the poems. The dedication says that whosoever cares to look in the little Book may look again if he cares to.
A poem called THE HOUSE AND THE ROAD has the little Road saying Go and the little House saying Stay. A poem headed CHARM: TO BE SAID IN THE SUN has a speaker who reaches arms up to the sky. A poem headed DANCE-TIME has a speaker who lives in a very wise Town where they read, they write, they read all day. A poem headed EPILOGUE. TO THE EVENING STAR speaks to a shining Guest who comes and looks upon us.
