About this book
Spring arrives through flowering orchards and the movement of boats toward open water in Bliss Carman's verse. Later Poems brings together selections from The Rough Rider, Echoes from Vagabondia and April Airs, along with poems previously uncollected in book form. The volume includes an appreciation by R. H. Hathaway, who discusses Carman's attachment to the natural world and his interest in the meaning of human life.
The poems give those concerns concrete shapes: a street musician draws children after him, fireflies send their small lights through dusk, and a coastal footpath offers quiet above the sea. In the New England verses, returning summer also sharpens the memory of a companion. Rhyming stanzas and musical phrasing make the scenes easy to hear as well as picture. Readers drawn to seasonal poetry will find spring's energy beside moments of longing and reflection.
