About this book

A narrator sits alone in his room at night, among a worn gun, a rod with a broken tip and the trophy heads on the wall. Once visitors leave and the fire burns low, the Singing Mouse comes out for its bit of bread, folds its tiny paws and sings. Each song turns into a story.

The twenty-two short pieces in the contents carry titles such as "What the Waters Said", "How the Mountains Ate Up the Plains" and "Where the City Went". They are fables of rivers, prairies, mountains and lakes, mixed with small lessons about patience and kindness, like the one about a man who keeps feeding a starving dog until it learns to trust him.

Emerson Hough, author of The Purchase Price and 54-40 or Fight, wrote them for younger readers in 1910, in a gentle, dreamy voice that suits reading aloud on a quiet evening.
