About this book

Gold brings a speaker north, but mountains, rivers and silence become harder to leave than the prospect of wealth. Robert W. Service's 1907 collection sets rhyming voices against the Yukon landscape, from bright summer woods to winters that make every trail a test of endurance. The title poem turns on the gap between returning with a fortune and feeling at home elsewhere.

Other verses shift from solitary reflection to stories of miners, restless workers and people living far from those they love. The Sam McGee episode gives a promise between companions the shape of a strange campfire tale, while quieter poems place longing beside everyday hardship. Strong rhythms and conversational speech make the writing suited to reading aloud. Readers can explore how the same northern setting supplies both peace and danger, and how its speakers weigh money, freedom, loyalty and belonging.
