About this book
The preface defines the work's purpose as a comprehensive, detailed view of the periods and styles of French and English furniture since the Renaissance period. The preface says that each period receives a chapter, with chapter lengths varying according to the importance and length of the periods.
The account of cabinets describes inlay or marquetry as the leading decorative feature, using flowers, birds, animals and foliage in bright colours or undyed exotic woods. The cabinet description includes ivory, mother-of-pearl and shell among the materials employed in the decoration. The examination of Chippendale's drawings says that carving and ornaments mattered more to him than the forms themselves, and that he does not seem to have invented a style.
