About this book
Princess Roseheart and Flame, a gifted young sculptor, fall in love in the forest realm of King Telwyn. Flame has come from an island threatened by fiery mountains and the sea. Telwyn accepts their promise of marriage but asks the young man to prove himself before claiming his bride. Beside a deep pool that mirrors the stars, a gray woman appears with troubling words about sorrow, destiny and the life of the soul.
Edna Kingsley Wallace gives this courtship the form of a prose poem, filling its fairy tale world with personified feelings and spiritual meanings. Flowers, changing light and sea colours recur throughout the descriptive language. In the later excerpt, Roseheart learns about the needs of her father's people, while Flame travels, shapes figures from clay and learns to temper his strength with compassion. The allegory offers readers a story of love tested by service, patience and growing responsibility.
