About this book
Courtship fills a young woman's thoughts in this verse narrative about Harry Vane. Tall, handsome, and soldierly in bearing, Harry accompanies her along a hawthorn lane, where their talk of birds mingles with her feelings for him. She compares love to the scent of violets and pictures herself looking back on these days in old age. Even an attempt at sewing cannot keep her mind from returning to Harry.
A loud knocking interrupts that private world. Four well dressed men arrive asking for Mr Vane, and the narrator recognizes them as policemen. Harry has not come home; as the clock strikes one, the visitors search the rooms and take note of what they find. Her account shifts from the familiar details of affection to confusion and alarm, with the strange visit seeming almost like a dream. The woman's voice holds the poem together through that change.
