About this book
The Story of Chautauqua is by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut, D.D., and is dedicated to the honoured memory of the two Founders of Chautauqua, Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent. The text says nobody knows, or will ever know, how this lake got its smooth-sounding Indian name, and gives one possible meaning of Chautauqua as the place of the leaping fish.
The text names William Rainey Harper, then Professor in the Baptist School of Theology at Morgan Park, Illinois, as entering the School of Languages in 1883. The text says Dr. Harper, President of the University of Chicago and holding classes all the year, was wont to take the train every Friday afternoon to spend Saturday and Sunday at Chautauqua.
