About this book
Emily Lawless sets out to make Ireland's complicated past easier to follow for readers approaching it for the first time. Her historical survey begins with early settlement, legends and Celtic law, then follows the spread of Christianity, the arrival of Vikings and the Anglo-Norman invasion. Kings, missionaries, territorial families and English rulers appear within a broad account of changing power and repeated conflict.
Her preface acknowledges how contested this history is and presents the book as an introduction to further study. In the discussion of the struggle against Tyrone, she weighs the character and choices of English commanders against the human costs of their policies. That attention to motive gives the narrative an argumentative voice as well as a sequence of events. Readers can use it to explore how a nineteenth-century writer connects Ireland's political troubles with its earlier history.
