About this book

A royal messenger and a roadside blacksmith give Maud Lindsay's opening tale two different views of useful work. The brothers part when they grow up, one entering the king's service and the other choosing his father's trade. Years later, a lost horseshoe threatens the delivery of a message that could prevent a war. The urgency of that errand gives a simple task at the forge a much wider importance.

Published in 1915, this collection of children's fairy tales combines songs and recurring phrases with stories of loyalty, generosity and persistence. The middle excerpt follows an old woman hoping to obtain apples for a dumpling. Her exchanges bring her into contact with a hungry family, whose need changes her immediate plans. These small decisions give the imagined world a familiar human scale. The book offers short pieces for shared reading, with everyday skills and concern for others at the center of its storytelling.
