About this book
The Sunshade, the Glove, the Muff is a work by Octave Uzanne, illustrated by Paul Avril. The preface mentions an earlier volume on The Fan and says the writer has determined to close this series of Woman’s Ornaments by a last little work. The text says that in ancient Greece, in the time of the festivals of Bacchus, it was the custom, not then confounded with fashion, to carry a Sunshade.
The text describes a statue of Bacchus, six cubits high and all in gold, that had over its head a Sunshade ornamented with gold. The writers say they end an essay with a sentiment of ridicule, laughing at themselves for having dreamed of making a perfect monograph. The text remarks that an opuscule of thirty pages arrives sometimes at three hundred, by an exaggerated literary conscience.
