About this book

At the window of an old house, seven-year-old Jeanne watches a snowy garden and wishes summer would return. Her nurse, Marcelline, draws her attention to the sparks in the fire and urges her to make a silent wish. Outside, the raven Dudu shares her dislike of the cold. Mrs. Molesworth gives this children's fantasy a domestic starting point, with Jeanne's demands for stories and Marcelline's guarded hints about fairies making the familiar room feel full of possibilities.

Later, moonlight brings colour back to a castle pictured on the wall hanging. Jeanne fits her cousin Hugh with wings, changes his clothes by magic, and takes his hand as they fly to the castle terrace with Dudu. The raven speaks, and a doorway reveals a hall that surprises Hugh. These scenes offer readers a story of childhood curiosity, where household objects become entrances to wonderful places and small wishes open into adventures shared with a companion.
