About this book
The Technique of Fiction Writing is by Robert Saunders Dowst. The preface says that many books have been written on fiction technique, and that the chief excuse for the present addition to the number is the complexity of the subject. The preface also states a belief that the chief deficiency in most works on fiction technique is that the author unconsciously has slipped from the viewpoint of a writer of a story to that of a reader.
The author says that the significant division of the short story is into the dramatic short story and the short story of atmosphere or unity of emotional effect on a reader, and that these two types are as different as black and white. The text names the mechanical elements of a story as its narrative, its description, and its dialogue or speech of the characters. A list of entries under Description includes description of persons, accuracy, mechanical limitations and use of all senses.
