About this book
The Telling of the Bees by Helen R. Hull ran in Liberty magazine on January 4, 1941. Marcia wakes to sunlight, expecting more of the week-long spring rain, and finds a bright wind moving through the larches, birches and apple blossoms. She lights the kitchen stove and looks out at the garden furrows drying. Her cabin is divided by an unpainted wooden partition.
Her thoughts turn to Stan Douglas, a neighbor, and his words, said the day after Dolly was buried, that it would be spring, when the blueberries flower again, before it was decent. She remembers last May, when she sat on a rock trying to work a sprayer for the blueberry blossoms and he stood grinning down at her. Elsewhere the story recalls Dolly's complaints of stomach pains in a January sleet storm, the doctor's advice by telephone, and a tense exchange between Marcia and Stan.
