About this book

On a wet Christmas morning, Mrs. Gratz discovers that nine hens and a rooster have vanished from her locked chicken house. A purse containing nine hundred dollars lies in the muddy yard, prompting laughter and giving her an unexpected reason to believe in Santa Claus. Her excitable neighbour, Mrs. Flannery, supplies enthusiastic theories about luck and rewards for kindness.

Ellis Parker Butler builds this short comic Christmas story around a calm widow and a nervous visitor whose explanations grow increasingly unlikely. The thin stranger first presents himself as a poultry buyer, then tells alarming tales about destructive bugs while trying to inspect the coop. Mrs. Gratz answers his inventions with practical observations and steady good humour. Readers who enjoy verbal sparring and small domestic absurdities will find a holiday tale shaped by contrasting personalities and a suspiciously valuable Christmas present.
