About this book

Water rising at the Seven Springs gives Arthur Christopher Benson a way to think about the course of a human life. Sitting beside the pool in a green valley, he follows the water in imagination toward the Thames and considers purpose, suffering and trust in God. These essays begin with close attention to ordinary surroundings, then move into the questions such moments awaken. The preface sets out his hope that hardship can teach patience and tenderness toward others.

Art, poetry, prayer, leisure and work appear among the collection's subjects. In the middle passage, a companion explains why he gave up his work and challenges the belief that prosperity makes life better. Their conversation weighs practical usefulness against a simpler life spent noticing beauty and helping people within reach. Readers interested in personal reflections on faith will find landscape descriptions alongside a searching account of contentment, uncertainty and kindness.
