About this book

Across flat fenland, drains, dykes and distant villages, Arthur Christopher Benson finds the quiet that frames these English essays. The Silent Isle begins with a decision to exchange a restless, complicated existence for a simpler life. Benson describes wide skies, field carts, bird calls and the unusual clarity of sounds in the countryside, turning close attention to a place into a way of considering everyday experience.

His introduction presents the collection as many sketches of life, each recording an impression rather than building a single theory. The later excerpt turns to the position of artists in a society that measures achievement through prosperity and public influence. Benson argues for beauty, emotion and the value of individual preferences. Readers drawn to reflective prose will find landscape description alongside questions about convention, useful work, friendship and the freedom to choose how to spend a brief life.
