About this book
Maximina is by Armando Palacio Valdés and was translated from the Spanish by Nathan Haskell Dole. Chapter I has Miguel reaching Pasajes late Friday afternoon and finding Ursula's boat moored to the shore on alighting from the train. The boat-woman greets Don Miguel and says she was beginning to think that she should not see him again, and that men are so queer about getting married. Miguel feels a sweet, gentle thrill of joy as the husband and wife look into each other's eyes, and he gives his bride's hand a stealthy kiss, but the hand is gloved.
Don Alfonso, whose last words Maximina had not heard, tells her she is a beautiful, fresh, fragrant, aromatic flower, which is absolutely unconscious of itself. Don Facundo asks Miguel to accept six thousand reals, saying that he is an old bachelor and the money he has is amply sufficient, and demands it in the name of the friendship that bound him to the father of Miguel.
