About this book

A young woman's entry into adult company unsettles the ease of London social life in Henry James's novel. The preface traces the story's beginnings to the change a growing daughter makes in a household accustomed to free conversation. From that small social adjustment, James develops a study of manners, family relationships and the expectations surrounding young women. His own account of the writing also explains how a projected light comedy expanded into a much larger work.

In the middle excerpt, the Duchess presses Mr. Longdon to take an interest in marriage arrangements involving her niece Aggie, Mr. Mitchett and Nanda's prospects. Their exchange mixes affection, money, reputation and urgent calculation. Readers who enjoy fiction built around conversation can follow how a polite request becomes pressure, and how judgments about a young woman's future emerge through remarks that sound casual. The interest lies in listening closely to what each speaker is asking of the other.
