About this book
A ruined coat can be good business for someone else in the London portrayed by John Thomson. Published in 1732, these satirical sketches expose the schemes of traders and opportunists who profit from the unwary. The opening turns a disastrous tavern supper into an account of commercial self-interest, then follows broken china, spoiled gowns and the persistent sales pitches that surround fashionable households.
Elsewhere, a supposed lottery winner entertains a company at a tavern, encourages costly attention and slips away when the bill arrives. Scenes around the courts extend the view to pickpockets and the crowds who gather around legal proceedings. The appeal lies in the concrete detail of shops, streets and taverns, together with a mocking voice that makes everyday buying and selling look like a contest of cunning.
