About this book
Belfast's shipbuilding yards fill the opening with smoke, hammer blows and towering steel frames. Filson Young begins his account of the Titanic by watching a vast structure gradually acquire the shape of a ship. The labour of builders, the calculations of designers and the scale of the materials give the vessel a physical presence before the narrative turns to the disaster at sea.
Published in 1912, the book combines descriptive prose with an account of events aboard the sinking liner. In the wireless room, operators Phillips and Bride move from routine messages to urgent calls for help after Captain Smith's orders. Young draws on Bride's account to show how news of the collision reached other ships, and how limited each person's view could be while attending to a particular duty. Readers interested in maritime history will find both the industrial ambition behind the ship and the human work of responding to an emergency.
