About this book
This is a volume of selections from the writings of John Ruskin, edited by Chauncey B. Tinker, professor of English in Yale College, and printed in 1908. The editor's preface says he gives entire chapters or lectures wherever practicable, or at least passages long enough to give a correct notion of Ruskin's work, and that the text follows the first editions unless Ruskin himself revised them later.
One passage discusses Ruskin's manner as a lecturer and the influence of Carlyle on his style. In one selection, the rough look of Gothic architecture is treated as a sign of its Northern origin and, more nobly, of religious principle. Another passage, on the work of men, says that many people think of what they are to get rather than of what they are to do.
