About this book

Horses approach a mountain home after dark, and Demetrio Macias takes up his rifle as soldiers arrive demanding food. The opening of Mariano Azuela's novel places the Mexican Revolution inside a small household, among farm tools, a sleeping child and the sounds of the sierra. When Demetrio later looks back from the mountains, he sees his house burning below.

The story moves from this intimate threat to the confusion of armed struggle. In the middle excerpt, soldiers trade exaggerated accounts of military power, while Luis Cervantes emerges from cover after a battle and Solis describes a dangerous advance. Dialogue carries pride, fear and the pressure to appear brave.
