A traveling scholar falls in with Don José, a soldier turned bandit, who confesses how a single encounter destroyed him. The cause is Carmen, a Romani cigarette-maker whose beauty is matched only by her refusal to belong to any man. Their affair burns through desertion, smuggling, and jealousy toward a violent end that neither can escape. Mérimée writes with the cool detachment of an observer, letting José's plain confession carry the full weight of obsession. The story later gave Bizet the material for his famous opera, though the original is leaner and colder. This free PDF and EPUB edition brings the 1845 tale back to readers at no cost.

Prosper Mérimée

Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) was a French novelist, archaeologist, and inspector of historical monuments known for tightly controlled novellas. A master of the concise, ironic tale, he helped introduce French readers to Russian literature and left his deepest mark with the story of Carmen.
