The Unknown Wrestler

Nan is collecting coins beside her blind father's violin when a young man deliberately knocks the hat from her hand. A stranger intervenes, demands an apology and borrows the instrument. His playing draws a generous response from the crowd, transforming a humiliating encounter into a moment of relief for father and daughter. He then disappears before Nan can thank him. H. A. Cody begins with a public act of kindness that leaves its young witness full of wonder.

A riverside scene introduces a more troubled kind of observation. Hidden nearby, Douglas watches Nell meet Ben and struggles with jealousy, suspicion and doubts about his own judgment. As he begins to consider whether she needs help, Jean Benton approaches with her attention fixed on the pair. Douglas reads jealousy into her movements too. These scenes give readers an adventure novel concerned with protection, uncertain motives and the difficulty of understanding other people's actions.
