At the inauguration of Albany's Dudley Observatory in 1856, Edward Everett set out to explain why studying the heavens matters to everyday life. His oration connects the expense of instruments and sustained observation with practical questions about time, distance, and the motions of celestial bodies. Clocks and watches provide his clearest example: their accuracy depends on measurements drawn from the sky, while travel east or west raises the problem of comparing local times.
The volume also records the observatory's inauguration and the dedication of New York State Geological Hall. Reports of crowds, scientific speakers, and public ceremonies place the address within a wider effort to support research and education.
