About this book

A ship from Virginia reaches Bristol in 1756, bringing a young passenger into a world of family connections, money and social expectations. William Makepeace Thackeray frames the Warrington twins' history through portraits, preserved letters and a narrator who imagines the scenes behind those documents. Their mother's careful keeping of correspondence gives private feelings a place beside the public events of eighteenth-century Britain and America.

The novel combines family life with the pressures of inheritance and war. In the middle excerpt, an emotional meeting gives way to the narrator's amused portrait of an English country gentleman, whose comfort and local prestige invite scrutiny. Such shifts make personal affection and social observation equally important to the reading experience. For readers drawn to historical fiction, the interest lies in how Thackeray connects large political conflicts with household loyalties, wealth and the stories families preserve about themselves.
