About this book
Ballads by William Makepeace Thackeray has a contents list that names, among others, The Chronicle of the Drum and The Mahogany Tree. A verse in the book asks whether everyone knows the Place de la Concorde, and goes on to describe terraces, fountains, and statues with a tall obelisk rising there. A verse says that dukes, marquises, barons, and princesses were splendidly served at the feasts of an ogress.
A speaker in one poem calls an alehouse bench his pulpit and a smiling rosy country wench his saint and patron holy. A verse asks what a Doctor could do once the darling Baby woke, crying for its nuss.
