About this book

The Ways of Men is by Eliot Gregory and carries a dedication to Edith Wharton. Chapter 1, headed Uncle Sam, remarks that names like Utica, Syracuse, and Ithaca raise in the minds of most Americans the picture of cocky little cities, rich only in trolley-cars and Methodist meeting-houses. One tale, marked as probably apocryphal, concerns a donkey that for years was the silent victim of a little terrier trained to lead him to water and back.

The donkey in that tale, getting his tormentor well out into deep water, quietly sat down on him. Another story has a young American girl complaining to the mistress of a pension that the concierge of the house had been impertinent. The text reports that Zola tells us in Nouvelle Campagne that his vivid impressions are all received during the first twenty-four hours in a new surrounding.
