About this book
The Turn of the Balance is a book by Brand Whitlock. Mrs. Koerner was mentally prostrated and Gusta was needed at home, where she took up her duties, attending the children, getting the meals, caring for the house and filling her mother's place.
Nussbaum asks Gusta how she is this morning and how her father is, and Gusta replies, "Oh, he's better, thank you, Mr. Nussbaum." Marriott says he will go and attend to it, rising at once, and Koerner tells him to wait just a minute. Archie suddenly whispers, "do something, Mr. Marriott!" and says he can't die to-night. Marriott seizes Archie's hand, which is cold and wet, and wrings it as hard as he can.
