About this book
Worldly Ways & Byways is a book by Eliot Gregory. A note to E. L. Godkin says Eliot Gregory wishes Godkin's name to appear on the first page of a volume, the composition of which was suggested by Godkin. The table of contents lists, among others, Charm, The Moth and the Star, Slouch and Bohemia.
The piece headed The Moth and the Star says that it is certainly an unexpected development that the great mass of Americans should take any interest in the comings and goings or social doings of a small set of wealthy and fashionable people. The text says that the words After all I have done for them are pretty sure to sum up the long tale of a housewife's griefs. The book describes new arrivals who acquired vast quantities of elaborate furniture, and worthless imitations secretly manufactured and sold to the travellers at fabulous prices.
