About this book

The Well of Saint Clare is by Anatole France. The speaker says the tales told by the Reverend Father Adone Doni on the road of Monte Oliveto are put into writing. The speaker would find the amiable Cordelier sitting on the edge of the mystic well and would seat himself by his side, and the Cordelier would tell some fragment of history known only to himself.

A passage about Giovanni di Fidanza, General of the Order, says that in the cradle he received from St. Francis himself the name of Bonaventure, and that he was called the Seraphic Doctor. A man afflicted in his soul, who for the first time in his life fell into melancholy, resolves to carry his difficulty to the General of the Order, to be rid of it as of a galling burden. A Dominican monk, who had lurked about the great doors all the day, slips within the vestibule, creeps to the steps where Doña Maria lay and throws himself on her corse.
